Missen als een ronde vorm (curated by Hanne Hagenaars)(scenography)

For the exhibition Missen als een ronde vorm, curator Hanne Hagenaars asked me to design the scenography and graphic design for this project at Stedelijk Museum Schiedam. Inspired by Hagenaars’ acclaimed book Missen als een ronde vorm, the exhibition presents a special selection of works by more than thirty artists exploring themes of loss and endurance, but also of resilience and vitality.

The scenography is formed by a number of chunky yet soft room dividers that are more like screens than walls. Having rounded edges, they playfully hint at the title of the exhibtion, while making the screens softer and allowing glimpses to be seen. It also features some wooden, open parts that do guide visitors along a certain path, while maintaining sightlines through the exhibition. Big hinges were created to give the screens an almost miniature feeling, again keeping sighlines intact. The design creates direction and intimacy around the presented artworks.

The design was beautifully made by the technical team of Stedelijk Museum Schiedam, with help of Bob van Lieshout. All photos were made by Aad Hoogendoorn.

The exhibition features work by: A young Yu (in collaboration with Nicholas Oh), Agnes Waruguru, Aida Kasaei, Aimée Zito Lema, Aline Thomassen, Arnoud Holleman, Ayşen Kaptanoğlu, Berend Strik, Bertien van Manen, Daan van Golden, Dirk Braeckman, Doina Kraal, Efrat Zehavi, Eva Spierenburg, Fatima Barznge, Fatima Hassouna, G, Hanne Hagenaars / Paul Kooiker, Sylvie Zijlmans & Hewald Jongenelis, Isabel Cavenecia, Jennifer Tee, Job Koelewijn, Kees de Goede, Keetje Mans, Kevin Simón Mancera, Mai van Oers, Marenne Welten, Marie-Claire Messouma Manlanbien, Mariëlle Videler, Marike Hoekstra, Marisca Voskamp, Minne Kersten, Mounir Eddib, Nazif Lopulissa, Odonchimeg Davaadorj, Oscar Abraham Pabón, Reinoud van Vught, Samboleap Tol, Shani Leseman, Simone Hoàng, Susanne Khalil Yusef, Teresa Margolles and Tiemar Tegene.
